(The fact that the first MTA alert was at, like, 10:14am, is another story.)

I then immediately walked to N. 7th and Driggs to wait for the B62 to take me down to Marcy Avenue, which I determined would be quicker than walking to Metropolitan and getting the G to downtown Brooklyn where I’d have to get a train to W 4th Street, or getting the B62 northbound and going to the 7 to the Lexington IRT downtown, or getting the B62 to the B39 across the Williamsburg and then connecting to something to get me uptown or just walking.

THREE. THREE OPTIONS IMMEDIATELY. I had three options, before even considering sharing a car or a taxi or even getting the ferry (god what I would give for a stop at 14th Street).

While I stood there waiting, I was struck by how many people had no idea what to do, where to go, where the B62 went. I literally heard dozens of, “But I’ve never taken the bus” reactions, while another dozen people demanded to be told what subway the bus ran to (not all of them do!) and where that subway went. I heard one person state the location of their office building and ask how they could get there by taking the bus that was about to arrive.

To the bus driver’s credit, he just yelled, “THE L IS OUT, DON’T BOTHER WITH THE CARDS, JUST GET ON THE BUS AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN” but the problem was that each special flower who entered the bus needed to try to ask the bus driver where he was going and where they should get off, instead of gathering some common sense that everyone getting on the bus was in the same boat. The driver just kept repeating that he went down to Broadway and the J/M/Z stop and that everyone should get on the bus.

At Broadway, the driver told everyone to get off (even though there is a stop significantly closer; I wondered if the stop had been eliminated and asked the driver, he said it wasn’t but that it was “quicker” to get off here, which is definitely not true). And once again, I watched the line of zombies extend down to the corner of Havemeyer, while the rest of us with actual brains walked calmly down to the main turnstile entrance and didn’t have to wait on line for even a split second.

People. If you do not know at least three different ways to get to your office from your apartment, figure that out right now. Why would you ever want to be in a situation in which you were stranded? and also HOW DO YOU NOT HAVE MTA.INFO ON YOUR PHONES?? ALL OF YOU HAVE A SMART PHONE!

You live here. Not knowing how to ride the buses isn’t a badge of honor, it’s a badge of STUPIDITY. Not knowing your part of town is foolish. Not being able to navigate public transit in your immediate area is short sighted.

Roxane Gay is Spelled With One "N": Shut Up About Writer Ladies And Babies

Roxane Gay is Spelled With One "N": Shut Up About Writer Ladies And Babies:
roxanegay:
